Round Up for Education Scholarship Program
A Message from Randy Wallace, General Manager
"Round Up for Education is an exciting new program that we hope will have far-reaching results within the areas we all call home. For many years, we had looked to develop a cooperative effort that would have a positive impact on the lives of virtually all of our members—something that will help create educational opportunities and economic benefits.
"We started the Round Up program in 2012. Each month, participating members’ bills are rounded up to the nearest dollar. We take the difference and put it in a fund designed to help any Pearl River Valley Electric member or their children who want to attend a Mississippi community college. The amount of the scholarship or stipend for each student depends on how much we are able to collect each year for the 12 months ending in July. The average round up would be 50 cents per month, or less than 2 cents per day. If every member contributes their round up amount, we can collectively raise hundreds of thousands of dollars each year and provide help to hundreds of students.
"We believe that providing more educational opportunities is key to improving the future for all of us in south Mississippi. Being a member-owned cooperative, Pearl River Valley Electric is in a unique position to be able to work together in a way that can help so many individuals. That’s what we have done throughout our 75+ year history, and we hope everyone will support this effort.
"We selected first-year community college students as a starting point to enhance the program’s initial impact. Community colleges are an excellent value and are an ideal place to begin higher education for many of our members. We also think the money we will be able to make available will have more impact for community college students. At this point, we will not include students attending 4-year colleges and universities, but with increased participation in the future our dream is to provide scholarships for every student on our lines.
"Members have the option to opt out of this round up program, but I would ask that you think twice before doing so. None of us really succeeds unless all of us have an opportunity to succeed. We hope this program will build something that can change lives within our service area, essentially using what would be spare change for most people each month."
